The Village of Vale was first conceived (by composer/musician John McGrew) as an immersive amalgam of music and storytelling that would bring to life a series of dark fairy tales all set in the same, strange village. Vale had its first workshop production at The Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn in 2015. It was further developed through New Victory LabWorks at the New Victory Theater during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. In addition, the show has received support from MIDDsummer Play Lab at Middlebury College and an Artist of Choice Award from the Kevin Spacey Foundation.

The Village of Vale has been developed through a collaboration between writers Jonathan Karpinos, John McGrew, and Joseph Varca; actors Jay Dunn and Tara Giordano; and musicians Katy Pfaffl and Jody Shelton. Lauren Elder, Graham Fisk, Jeff Kerestes, Scott McCreary, Emil McGloin, and Maya Sharpe have performed in the show during its development; Graham Fisk also contributed additional music.

The Village of Vale is supported by The Kevin Spacey Foundation.
